Dragon Flight is a kinetic installation inspired by tornadoes that artificially recreates a
natural phenomenon.
Inside a three-meter-high transparent acrylic cube, a ceiling fan and a fog machine are
installed to generate an artificial tornado. Air flows in through narrow openings on all four
sides, while an Arduino-controlled fan operates at random intervals, producing a rotating
updraft. This creates negative pressure inside the cube, drawing outside air through the narrow
gaps into the interior, where it combines with the fog to form a vortex.
The core of the work lies in mechanically translating the unpredictability of nature. Viewers do
not know when the tornado will appear—some will witness it, while others may give up and move
on. The mechanical components are deliberately left visible, exposing the artificiality of the
construction while simultaneously evoking a sense of awe toward natural phenomena.
The work explores the relationship between nature and technology, predictability and
unpredictability, by employing modern technology inspired by natural forces.
